5 Benefits of Resistance Training

Running ,walking, cycling and other aerobic exercises are good for your health but nothing can replace the benefits of Resistance Training:

Here are 5 Reasons You Should Resistance Training

1 BUILD STRONG BONES – Studies show that strength training increases bone mass and in particular spinal bone mass.  This is massive!  It’s impossible to maintain good posture without strong bones to support us.  We’ve all seen people with bad posture who often suffer with chronic pain.  HERE is a great article discussing a study by Ontario’s McMaster University on the effects of strength training and bone mass

2. BURN MORE CALORIES AT REST – Muscle burns more calories at rest than fat.  The research varies in terms of how many more calories muscle burns at rest, however the conclusion in all the studies is that it does burn more.  So weather it’s 10 or 50 calories more per hour doesn’t really matter.  The point is more muscle more calories burned.

3. REDUCE INJURY – Having a strong skeletal and muscular system will support your body to stay strong and healthy.  Accidents do happen however having a strong body will help you with daily activities such as carrying heavy shopping or running for that bus safely.

4.  IMPROVE YOUR MOOD –  Studies now show there is a link between resistance training and improved mood. The findings found improvements in the areas of confusion, tension and anger. Click HERE to read the study.

5. CHANGE YOUR BODY SHAPE – Ah, there’s nothing wrong with a little vanity.  Looking your best and admiring your new found muscles is great for self esteem and your mental health.

Resistance training can be done with body weight, resistance bands, weights or anything that increases the load on your muscles.

Tip:  If you’re interested in lifting weights it’s worth hiring a personal trainer to ensure you’re doing what’s best for your current level.  If you can’t afford a trainer every week, it’s worth paying for 1-2 sessions to learn proper technique and get a program that you can then follow on your own.

Be strong!
