At The Gym: Are you a jack of all trades, master of none?

Do you like trying every kind of exercise you see, copying moves that you think are cool?

Chances are that person standing on the giant stability ball doing dumbell bicep curls, looking like it’s the toughest exercise on earth, really isn’t accomplishing what they think they are. (Don’t get us wrong, stability balls are great when used for the right reason – click HERE for more)

First off all chances of falling off that ball are quite good, second of all if a quality bicep curl is what they are trying to accomplish I can almost guarantee they won’t be lifting half the weight they could lift if they were standing with their feet firmly on the ground.

The gym is not a circus space, (although at times it can be as entertaining) it’s a place to get strong, fit, healthy and train your body to move well so that you can go about you’re every day life with minimal effort, to perform better when taking part in sports you love, or even dare I say, to look great!

Try mastering these movements: Squat, Lunge, Pull up, Overhead press, Dead lift and Push Up

These movements will work major muscles in your body:  back, glutes, chest, shoulders, legs and yes your core!

Mastering these movements, will make you strong, increase muscle mass, increase flexibility (if done to full range).  Learning new exercises can be fun and of course many movements apart from this list will also be of benefit; however the point is to get a strong base first then move on to the fancier stuff.

The next time you’re at the gym look around.  More often than not the people with the strong lean physiques are those doing the movements mentioned above.  They don’t mess around!

Remember proper technique is crucial to achieving results and staying injury free.  If you’re unsure how to preform these movements have a professional show you.  It will be worth your time and investment.

Look cool by doing things right, not by doing many things mediocre.

Stay strong!
