Phytonutrients: Fight-O-Nutrients!

Most have heard of antioxidants however not many people have heard of phytonutrients.  Phytonutrients haven’t received the media attention that antioxidants have however they play an incredible role in our health and most importantly in the prevention of diseases.

What are Phytonutrients? They’re bioactive compounds found in fruits and vegetables

What’s the big deal? The big deal is they are powerful compounds believed to  help reduce the risk of many chronic diseases including cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and stroke just to name a few.

This is one of the reasons organisations around the world actively promote a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

Why not just take a multivitamin? Research is now finding that synthetic multivitamins are not providing the health benefits once believed and may even in some cases be harmful.   Most importantly multivitamins do not provide you with phytonutrients.

There really is something to the old: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Be sure to read this reasearch on apples.  It goes on to explain how vitamin C, vitamin E (basically isolated single compounds) do not work alone, it’s together in synergy that they work to protect us from disease.

This is one more reason to be sure to not only eat your fruits and vegetables daily but also a large variety to ensure your body gets the greatest variety of nutrients possible.

How many fruits and vegetables do you eat? Like most things people think they eat more than they actually do.  Give yourself a test and count how many you’ve had.  Next ask yourself do you eat the same types of fruit and vegetables regularly.

If you struggle like most then have a look at this. This is one way to guarantee you get variety and a base of phytonutrients and antioxidants in your system daily.  Most importantly the fruits and vegetables are picked once they are vine ripened ensuring they’ve reached their nutritional potential.

Be lifelong healthy!
