Good Gut Feeling

The Gut has got to be one of the most fascinating parts of our body.  It’s an amazing machine that works without us even thinking about it; however the same thing that makes it amazing is also the biggest reason we don’t always treat it with the care and respect it deserves.

The gut processes the food we eat.  It’s where the nutrients, vitamins and minerals of our food are absorbed so our body can function, be strong and healthy.

This complex system ‘our gut’ consists of:

1. The Mouth

2. Oesophagus

3. The Stomache

4. Small Intestine

5. Large Intestine

6. The Pancreas

7. The Liver

8. The Gallbladder

Amazing!!! This list of organs all need to work together every second of the day to ensure you stay healthy.  It’s true this complex system works without you telling it to, however it does rely on one thing:  What you eat!  You are in control of how hard your gut has to work for you.  Give it the right things and it stays happy, in tune and strong.  Give it the wrong things and it becomes sluggish, rusty and weak.

Diet, stress, alcohol, smoking and pollution all have detrimental effects on the gut. Most of these factors are in our control and those that aren’t you’re gut can handle so long as you keep them to a minimum.  Giving your gut plenty of what it needs to function to will help it to deal with the environmental stresses that aren’t in your control.

Be good to your gut.  Here are a list of things you can do to maintain a healthy gut.

1. A diet high in fruits & vegetables – Fibre, phytonutrients and antioxidants, this is natures best multivitamin

2. Drinking plenty of water – Over half our bodies are made up of water

3. Having regular smaller meals – Large meals make your system work on overdrive

4. Chew your food properly and eat slowly – Eating on the run or at your desk is never a good idea

5. Limit alcohol – Keep it to once or twice a week and limit to 1-2 glasses, or eliminate altogether

6. Eliminate processed foods – There’s simply no need for them

7. Eat healthy fats – Olive oil, flax seed oil, coconut oil, avocados, etc

8. Exercise – Excess weight around your midsection puts pressure on your digestive system

Implementing these key strategies daily will keep your gut strong and healthy, as a result you will feel strong, energetic and healthy.

It’s a shame that most people only think of their health once it’s gone.  Don’t wait for something to go wrong.  Work hard now to keep your body strong from the inside out.
