What are kettlebells?
Kettlebells are literally a cannonball with a handle.
Where did they originate?
Although kettlebells may be new to many they have been around for over 100 years. Some sites claim they were founded in Greece or Scotland, with a more popular claim being they are Russian. They became a competitive sport in Russia in the 1940’s. They later became popular in the United States around 2000.
Who Trains with Kettlebells?
Athletes, the military, and the average person can all benefit from kettlebell training.
Are they a fad?
Kettlebells are definitely here to stay. They are becoming increasingly available in mainstream gyms and all sorts of DVD’s, books and training courses have come out with kettlebell training.
Why are Kettlebells so amazing?
Effectiveness: When used correctly kettlebells are an extremely effective tool for developing core strength, cardiovascular fitness and building lean muscle.
Versatility: Kettlebells can be used as a dead weight as you would a dumbbell or they can be used for dynamic kettlebell movements such as a swing, snatch, or clean.
Home gym with a handle:
Kettlebells are perfect for people who would like to train at home and yet do not want to store a lot of equipment. With one or two kettlebells you can get an intense and effective workout in a short amount of time.
What kind of kettlebell should I buy?
Not all kettlebells are created equally. Unfortunately with anything that becomes very popular you quickly start to get copycats but not always quality ones.
Things that matter: The angle between the bell, the handle and the material.
1. You want the handle to be cast iron. Be aware of handles that are coated in rubber. These will tear your hands if you are doing several repetitions of any kind of swinging movement, (which you will want to do if you bought a bell)
2. The angle: There are some funny shaped handles out there. You want your hand to feel comfortable holding the bell in an overhead positions while holding the bell with your hand closest to the thumb corner. If the bell isn’t comfortable then overhead movements will be uncomfortable and like anything could possibly lead to injury.
3. A kettlebell will last you forever! It’s worth paying an extra few pounds/ dollars to get the real thing. There are all sorts of gimmicky bells out there where you can add and take away weights, fill it with water or sand, etc. Get a real cast iron bell, you will be glad you did!
What weight should I get?
This is a loaded question as it really depends on the exercise you are performing. Having said to get started one will do but you will find that you will want 2-3 different sizes to increase the difficulty and versatility of your workouts.
Women: Most women get kettlebells that are too light rather than too heavy. If you are just starting, start with an 8kg or 12kg, if you get both that’s even better.
Men: Most men try to go too heavy. Like anything in time you will want to go heavier but to start go for a 12kg and a16kg. Even when you move on to the heavier bells you will want the lighter ones for warm ups or for sessions where you are working more on volume rather than strength.
Something to think about!
Kettlebells are an amazing tool for training but they are just that, a tool. Your technique, form and intensity are what will determine their effectiveness.
Like anything you cannot get everything you want from kettlbells, it’s still important to work on mobility and flexibility separately. If you are looking to put on a lot of muscle then they will likely not be your training tool of choice.
Kettlebells are amazing! You can do a lot with them, they are here to stay, they are fun, dynamic and effective.
They are worth the investment!
If you are looking for kettlebells that fit all the criteria mentioned above,a very reliable and extremely good quality kettlebell can be purchased at Life Line USA
